FAQ

How long does a treatment take?

The length of a laser treatment may be anywhere from a few minutes to an hour or more, depending on the size of the area being treated.

How many treatments will I need? That depends on your hair and skin type and how well you tolerate the procedure.   Generally, it requires a minimum of 4-8 treatments for the best possible results.
So how long does this process take? Treatments are typically separated by about 4 - 10 weeks, so a typical treatment time frame can run from 4 - 12+ months for a full treatment regime.
How does the laser work? The laser produces a beam of highly concentrated laser light.  The light emitted by the LightSheer© diode laser is well absorbed by the pigment located in hair follicles.   During the procedure, the laser pulses for a fraction of a second, long enough to heat up the hair and significantly impede the follicle's ability to re-grow.  This process also treates numerous hair follicles simultaneously.
What are the side effects? Side effects, if any, are minor.  They may include redness and swelling around the hair follicle, which are actually desired clinical responses and indicate that the follicle has responded to the treatment.  Other possible side effects include increased or decreased pigmentation of the skin.  These pigment changes may be more noticeable in darker skin and to date have been temporary.
What will the laser treatment feel like?  Will it hurt? It will feel like a pricking sensation in the skin.  Some people have compared it to little drops of fat jumping out of a frying pan onto your skin.  Topical anaethesia can be given if requested.

What do I need to do to prepare for a treatment? For best results, don't tweeze/wax/use depilatories/electrolysis 4-6 weeks before treatment (shaving, scissor clipping, bleaching is okay)

No Retin A/Glycolic Acid/Chemical Peels 3 days prior to treatment

Avoid Sun/Tanning Beds 1-2 weeks before treatment

No Accutane for 6 months prior to treatment

What about preparation on the day of treatment?

Shave all areas to be treated and remove make-up/lotions/creams/deoderants in treatment areas.
I get cold sores - is there anything I need to take before treatment? Yes. If you have a history of oral or genital herpes and you are having facial or bikini hair removed, we can prescribe an anti-viral medication the day of your treatment, or you can obtain medication from your private physician.
Does the laser work on gray, white, red, or blond hair? The laser is not as effective on light-colored hair, since it is the pigment (melanin) in the hair that attracts the laser's energy.  Please call for a consult, though - we are always happy to evaluate the possibility.
Does the laser work for all colors of skin? Yes.  The LightSheer© diode laser is FDA approved for all skin types and colors.
